The U5 is a roughly 22 km long line of the Berlin U-Bahn with 26 stations, opened on 21 December 1930, connecting Berlin Hauptbahnhof via Alexanderplatz and the eastern residential areas to Hönow on the eastern city outskirts.
The U-Bahn line U5 runs from Berlin Hauptbahnhof in Moabit eastward via Brandenburger Tor, Unter den Linden, Museumsinsel and Alexanderplatz along the Karl-Marx-Allee and Frankfurter Allee through Lichtenberg and Friedrichsfelde, then above ground over Kaulsdorf and Hellersdorf to Hönow on the eastern city outskirts. It has 26 stations and a length of roughly 22 km. The line was opened on 21 December 1930 (section Alexanderplatz–Friedrichsfelde); its last expansion was the U5 extension from Alexanderplatz to the Hauptbahnhof on 4 December 2020, which incorporated the former line U55.
The Großprofil line E was opened on 21 December 1930 between Alexanderplatz and Friedrichsfelde and remained the only Großprofil line in East Berlin until 1990. This was followed by the extensions to Tierpark (25 June 1973), to Elsterwerdaer Platz (1 July 1988) and to Hönow (1 July 1989). The section Hauptbahnhof–Brandenburger Tor (U55), opened in August 2009, was connected to the U5 on 4 December 2020 by closing the gap to Alexanderplatz, giving the U5 access to the Hauptbahnhof.
