Overview

The U-Bahn line U7 is the longest U-Bahn line in Berlin: it has 40 stations, is 31.8 km long and runs entirely underground. It leads from Rathaus Spandau in the northwest via Siemensstadt, Charlottenburg, Schöneberg and Neukölln to Rudow in the southeast. The oldest section (Hallesches Tor–Belle-Alliance-Straße–Grenzallee) was opened on 19 April 1924 as a branch line of the Nord-Süd-Bahn; since 28 February 1966 the U7 has been an independent line, with its last extension taking place on 1 October 1984 to Rathaus Spandau.

Operator

Operated by Berlin Transport Company (BVG).

History

The U7 originated as the southeastern branch line (C I) of the Nord-Süd-Bahn, whose first section was opened on 19 April 1924 between Belle-Alliance-Straße (today Mehringdamm) and Gneisenaustraße. In several stages it grew into today's line: 1963 to Britz-Süd, 1966 separation from line C and extension to Möckernbrücke, 1970/72 to Rudow as well as 1978 to Richard-Wagner-Platz. On 1 October 1984, in the presence of Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the section to Rathaus Spandau was opened. With 31.8 kilometres and 40 stations, the fully underground U7 is the longest Berlin and German U-Bahn line.
