Overview
U-Bahn line U1 is one of the eight regularly operated lines of the Munich U-Bahn. It runs over a distance of 12.2 km between Olympia-Einkaufszentrum in the district of Moosach and Mangfallplatz in Untergiesing-Harlaching, serving 15 stations. The line was established in 1980 together with the then U8 (today's U2) and initially ran on its trasse; only after the completion of the branch to Rotkreuzplatz (1983) did it become an independent line. In 1997 the southern extension beyond Kolumbusplatz to Mangfallplatz was opened, and in 2004 the U1 reached Olympia-Einkaufszentrum in the north.
The line colour of the U1 is green. In the heavily frequented inner-city section it runs together with the U2 on the Stammstrecke 2 between Hauptbahnhof, Sendlinger Tor and Kolumbusplatz at close intervals.
Operator
The operator is the Munich Transport Company (MVG), a subsidiary of Stadtwerke München (SWM).
History
The U1 began operations on 18 October 1980 together with the original U8 (today's U2) and initially ran on a section of the U2 route; with the opening of the branch to Rotkreuzplatz (28 May 1983) it became an independent line. Until 1998 the Rotkreuzplatz was the northern terminus of the line. The U1 was then extended northwards in stages: in 1998 to Westfriedhof, in 2003 to Georg-Brauchle-Ring and on 31 October 2004 to Olympia-Einkaufszentrum. The line received the southern section Kolumbusplatz–Mangfallplatz on 8 November 1997.
