Overview
The Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (MVG) is the municipal transport company of the Bavarian state capital Munich, headquartered in Munich. It was founded on 27 June 2001 and is a 100% subsidiary of the Stadtwerke München (SWM), which in turn is wholly owned by the city of Munich. As part of the restructuring of the municipal transport companies, the MVG took over the U-Bahn, tram and bus business from the SWM transport companies at the turn of the year 2001/2002. The MVG is a partner in the Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVV) and operates the association network in coordination with the S-Bahn München and other transport companies. The company also operates the MVG Museum on Ständlerstraße.
Operations
- U-Bahn: operation of all eight lines U1–U8 (including the reinforcement lines U7 and U8) with around 100 stations; the U-Bahn facilities were built by the state capital Munich and are operated by SWM/MVG. During peak hours the lines run every 5 minutes.
- Tram: operation of the Munich tram network with more than a dozen lines; after decades of downsizing, the network has been expanded again (e.g. Westtangente).
- Bus: operation of the Munich city bus network (MetroBus, StadtBus and ExpressBus lines), partly in cooperation with private contracted companies.
Operator structure
The MVG is 100 % owned by the Stadtwerke München (SWM), the municipal utility company; the company is therefore in the ownership of the city of Munich. The S-Bahn München is not part of the MVG and is operated by a DB company.
History
The Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH was founded on 27 June 2001 as a subsidiary of the Stadtwerke München and took over the operation of U-Bahn, tram and city buses from the Stadtwerke München Verkehrsbetriebe, which were dissolved at the same time. As a 100 per cent subsidiary of the Stadtwerke München, whose shareholder is the state capital Munich, the MVG has since operated the municipal transport network within the Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVV).
