Overview

U-Bahn line U2 runs over 24.4 km between Feldmoching in the north of Munich, where connection to the S1 towards Freising and the airport is available, and Messestadt Ost in the east; it serves 27 stations. It was put into operation on 18 October 1980 with the opening of the Stammstrecke 2 (Hauptbahnhof–Innsbrucker Ring) and was initially designated U8. At 24.4 km, it is the longest line of the network; its line colour is red.

The U2 is the only line that runs on all three trunk lines of the network: north of the Hauptbahnhof it shares the trasse with the U3/U6 up to Scheidplatz, in the inner-city section it runs together with the U1 (Stammstrecke 2), and east of the Innsbrucker Ring it runs as an independent branch via Trudering to Messestadt. In the urban section Milbertshofen–Innsbrucker Ring it is supplemented during peak hours by the reinforcement line U7.

Operator

The operator is the Munich Transport Company (MVG), a subsidiary of Stadtwerke München (SWM).

History

Today's U2 went into operation on 18 October 1980 as U8 between Scheidplatz and Neuperlach Süd and has borne the designation U2 since 1988; no other Munich U-Bahn branch underwent more route and name changes. The line was extended northwards in 1993 to Dülferstraße and on 26 October 1996 to Feldmoching. On 29 May 1999 the opening of the branch to the trade fair grounds followed; since then the U2 ends at Messestadt Ost and ceded the section to Neuperlach Süd to the U5.
