Overview
U-Bahn line U5 runs over 15.4 km between Laimer Platz in the west and Neuperlach Süd in the south-east, serving 18 stations. The line colour is brown. The line was opened on 10 March 1984 together with the U4 on the route Westendstraße–Karlsplatz; in 1988 the western extension to Laimer Platz followed, as well as the eastern extension from Odeonsplatz via the Ostbahnhof to the Innsbrucker Ring and further into the satellite town of Neuperlach up to Neuperlach Süd. The U5 is, besides the U6, the only line to leave its tunnel: after Therese-Giehse-Allee it runs on the surface to the elevated station Neuperlach Süd, where transfer-free connections to the S7 are available.
Together with the U4, the U5 runs on the trunk line via Westendstraße, Hauptbahnhof, Karlsplatz (Stachus), Odeonsplatz and Lehel to Max-Weber-Platz. A western extension to Pasing is under construction.
Operator
The operator is the Munich Transport Company (MVG), a subsidiary of Stadtwerke München (SWM).
History
The U5 went into operation on 10 March 1984 together with the U4 on the section Westendstraße–Karlsplatz. On 24 March 1988 the western section Westendstraße–Laimer Platz was opened, on 27 October 1988 the section Odeonsplatz–Innsbrucker Ring; since 1999 the U5 has operated the route to Neuperlach Süd alone. An extension from Laimer Platz to Pasing (construction started in 2024, opening planned for the early 2030s) is under construction.
