Overview

The U8 is a reinforcement line of the Munich U-Bahn. With the timetable change on 15 December 2013, the reinforcement services that had already run on Saturdays from Olympiazentrum via the Hauptbahnhof to the Sendlinger Tor received their own line number; since 9 December 2018 the trains have continued on to Neuperlach Zentrum. The line runs on Saturday afternoons only, relieves the lines U2 and U3, and enables a transfer-free connection from the Hauptbahnhof to the Olympic Park. It serves 19 stations on all three trunk lines of the network.

The U8 exclusively uses the routes of other lines: between Olympiazentrum and Scheidplatz it runs parallel to the U3 (Stammstrecke 1), then up to the Innsbrucker Ring parallel to the U2 (Stammstrecke 2), and from there parallel to the U5 (Stammstrecke 3) to Neuperlach Zentrum. It therefore serves a section of the historic line U8 of 1980–1988, which at that time ran from Olympiazentrum via the Sendlinger Tor to Neuperlach Süd.

Operating hours

The U8 runs on Saturday afternoons only. During construction works in the network it is occasionally operated shortened (e.g. between Hauptbahnhof and Neuperlach Zentrum).

The operator is the Munich Transport Company (MVG), a subsidiary of Stadtwerke München (SWM).

History

With the timetable change on 15 December 2013, the Saturday-afternoon reinforcement line between Olympiazentrum and the trade fair branch received its own line number; it relieves the U2 and U3 and improves the connection from the Hauptbahnhof to the Olympic Park. On 9 December 2018 the U8 was extended to Neuperlach Zentrum. Already from 1980 to 1988 there had been a U8 between Olympiazentrum and Neuperlach Süd, which was renamed U2 in 1988.
