U-Bahn line U4 runs over 9.2 km between Westendstraße in the west and Arabellapark in the east, serving 13 stations; it is thus the shortest line of the Munich U-Bahn. The line colour is mint green. The line was opened on 10 March 1984 with the route Westendstraße–Karlsplatz; in 1986 the extension to Odeonsplatz followed, and on 27 October 1988 the branch from Max-Weber-Platz to Arabellapark. Originally the line was planned as U9.
The U4 runs together with the U5 on the trunk line via Westendstraße, Hauptbahnhof, Karlsplatz (Stachus), Odeonsplatz and Lehel to Max-Weber-Platz, where the two lines part. It is the only line that is regularly operated mainly with four-car short trains (except on Friday afternoons and during the Oktoberfest). From around 8:40 pm the U4 only runs between Odeonsplatz and Arabellapark.
The U4 went into operation on 10 March 1984 together with the U5 on the section Westendstraße–Karlsplatz; the route was originally planned as U9. On 1 March 1986 the section Karlsplatz–Odeonsplatz followed. On 27 October 1988 the U4 reached its present eastern terminus at Arabellapark; the planned extension to Johanneskirchen was never built.
