Overview
Berlin is the federal capital and a city state entirely surrounded by Brandenburg. About 3.66 million inhabitants (2022 census) live on around 892 km² – Berlin is also Germany's largest city. Its ISO-3166-2 code is DE-BE. After reunification in 1990, Berlin received the full status of a federal state.
Administrative divisions
As a city state, Berlin is city and state at once; there are no rural districts. Instead, the city is divided into 12 boroughs (e.g. Mitte, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Neukölln), which perform the tasks of municipal administration.

Berlin's U-Bahn network with lines U1 to U9 is operated by BVG, complemented by the Berlin S-Bahn. With Berlin Brandenburg Airport, several ICE hubs and a dense road and cycling network, Berlin is the central transport hub of the east.
Economy
Berlin is a centre for services, the digital economy, creative and cultural industries and start-ups; compared with the territorial states, industry plays a smaller role.
