Overview
Built from October 1966 to October 1971, the station lies on four levels beneath Marienplatz, the New Town Hall and the Marienhof. The U-Bahn platforms for U3 and U6 are among the oldest of the Munich U-Bahn; the S-Bahn trunk line entered service on 28 April 1972 for the Olympic Games. In 2007 around 175,400 people used the station on weekdays for boarding, alighting and transferring.
Services
- U-Bahn: North–south crossing of lines U3 and U6
- S-Bahn: Central station of the trunk line, served by all S-Bahn lines (S1–S8); platforms 1 and 2 lie on separate levels in a Spanish solution layout
Station layout
The station has two S-Bahn tracks (on two superimposed levels with platforms on both sides, each 210 m long) and two U-Bahn tracks at an island platform. The distribution level, modernised in 2007–2011, connects all levels with lifts, escalators and a shopping passage.
