The first section between Plärrer and Schweinau was opened on 28 January 1984; in 1999 the line reached its present terminus at the airport. The section between Ziegelstein and the airport is the only single-track tunnel section of a German U-Bahn. Since January 2010, the U2 has been running entirely driverless.
The U2 was opened on 28 January 1984 between Plärrer and Schweinau and was extended northwards in several sections. On 27 November 1999 it reached its present terminus with the Herrnhütte – Flughafen section. In 2010, the line was converted to fully automatic driverless operation (RUBIN); the older DT1 and DT2 trainsets were subsequently transferred to the U1.
