The line was opened in several sections between 1902 and 2000; the oldest section of today's line belongs to the trunk line of 18 February 1902 (section Potsdamer Platz–Zoologischer Garten: 11 March 1902).

History
The western part of today's U2 belongs to the trunk line of the Berlin U-Bahn opened on 15/18 February 1902 (section Potsdamer Platz–Zoologischer Garten from 11 March 1902); by 1929 the line had been extended to Ruhleben. After the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the line's route was divided: the eastern section ran as line A of the BVB, the western section as line 2 of the BVG. In 1993 the two parts were reunited as the continuous line U2, with the last extension taking place on 16 September 2000 from Vinetastraße to Pankow.
